The Maze - Rated 8
The Maze
The Maze has quickly become known as one of St. George’s ‘must do’ trails for those who enjoy a more technical and hard-core challenge. If you aren’t bothered by steep ascents and descents, extremely off-camber situations, and exposure to 1,200-foot cliff edges, then this trail is for you!
The obstacles come one after another with consistent difficulty. As you approach the first obstacle (The Drop), you may glance down to your right and between two rocks to notice that you are within a few feet of a cliff that is 1,000 feet above the valley below. This is a trail to delight those who can appreciate adrenaline at 1 mile an hour.
Scenery
For short distances between obstacles, drivers can pause to see fantastic views of Warner Valley almost straight down from the trails edge. In the distance you can see the Arizona Strip. The Strip is the approximately 50-mile strip of land between the Utah/Arizona border and the Grand Canyon. There are several mountain peaks in the Strip.
Surface
For Trail Hero, the Maze is accessed from Sand Hollow State Park, going through the tunnel to access Hurricane Sand Dunes. After driving up near the top of the Dunes, there is a short descent to the trail poised on a cliff above Warner Valley. The majority of the trail is slickrock, with some sandy and rocky areas between the slickrock obstacles. The return trip is down the dunes to Sand Hollow State Park
Trail Details
The first obstacle, known as ‘The Drop’, is just the beginning of an unrelenting series of white-knuckling and adrenaline pumping challenges, the hardest of which is the climb of an intimidating double-fall, perched above a towering 1,200-foot drop at You Gotta Be Nuts. And if that is not enough for you, there is the opportunity to attempt ‘The Soup Bowl’ near the end.
The Maze can be accessed from either Washington Dam staging area via West Rim Scenic route or alternatively from Sand Hollow Reservoir through the sand dunes. Rigs should be equipped with two lockers and a minimum of 33-inch tires as well as a winch. Short wheel-base rigs are not recommended for this trail. Expect possible body damage and/or mechanical breakdown.
