Trail Hero Newsletter #3 - Mapping out Sand Hollow, Vendor Show Details
I can't begin to tell you guys how much I love Trail Riding. Getting outside, giving my children the same opportunities given to me, teaching them to care for our environment, experiencing the great outdoors; the list goes on. This last week however, I have been driving more trails than I know what to do with, lol. Of course we are doing this in anticipation of the event, to ensure that the trails are clean and presentable, but also to map the trails. As I am sure you are all aware if you have been to Sand Hollow, it can be very difficult to find the trails you want to ride on. Sometimes it is even difficult to figure out where the trail goes once you are in the middle of it. Our trails in Southern Utah have had such little amounts of traffic that finding the trails can be somewhat daunting.
With this in mind, we have developed a map system with the help of CartoTracks and Jake White. We flew him out to map out all of the trails we could fit into his time here. Over 7 days, that turned out to be 32 trails, no easy feat by any means. We had some help doing it as well since I just sold my buggy days before his arrival to build a new rig. Shon Wilson, Ryan Chapman, Woody Swearingen, and Scott Galbraith all loaned out vehicles to us so that we could average 4.57 trails a day, lol. Considering the immense heat, our days normally started out at 5 am and our morning session finished at noon. We would take a 5 hour break, often digitizing the maps and developing the routes, then we would get back out on the trail from 5-6 to midnight, every night.
Needless to say, I am happy that we got it all mapped, and I am also happy that I won't be on the trail for two weeks while I am at work in Alaska. A great chance to recharge my batteries and hit it hard again when I get home. The Maps wil be available for download in the couple days prior to the Trail Hero Event. The unique aspect of this mapping system is that you can use your smart device (phone, ipad, tablet, etc) to give you real time tracking of your current position in relationship to the trail. The best part... you don't need cell service for it to work! It will be a great way to get everyone on the trails, and we look forward to you checking out the system.
